Master Class 2007 Rachel Gogerly BA (Hons): Finishing Techniques for Enamelling

Rachel Gogerly is a successful designer maker of contemporary silver and enamel jewellery.  She has also taught enamelling on a number of college and university courses.   As a selector for the Guild Rachel has been particularly concerned about the standard of finish and this is one of the reasons for inviting her to take a master class to pass on her tips and techniques.

I am delighted to be presenting the Master Class on Finishing Techniques at the Conference in Exeter, as I am aware that out of all the enamel processes we learn and practise, finishing is often the one that is frequently neglected.
The finish on any piece of work can vary depending on the desired effect being created, but it is widely recognised that with enamel, the most difficult finish to achieve is that of a perfectly smooth shiny even colour, with no pitting, cloudiness or other defects.  We will go through the steps required to produce this high quality finish.
Explanation of why every step of the enamel process is relevant to the final outcome of your work, along with how to achieve that perfectly smooth finish on both enamel and metal surface (including dealing with fire stain) will be covered in this Master Class.
Focus will be on the key techniques of stoning, final firings, pumice and rouge polishing.  Demonstrations of how to stone, brush out and re-fire work will be given.  The polishing techniques will show how you can enhance the enamel surface and remove scratches and fire stain from the silver without damaging the enamel.
This session promises to be an informative insight into how to achieve a professional finish to your work and I look forward to seeing you there!
